Powell sources new youth line from Brazil
Solid wood group marks company's return to South American resource

HIGH POINT - (May 9, 2016) - For the first time in more than 10 years, Powell Home Fashions has returned to Brazil for a new solid wood youth line that includes bunk beds, twin beds and storage pieces.

The company had a soft launch for the program at the January Las Vegas Market but offered a larger selection at the April High Point Market that includes five bunk beds, two twin beds and four case pieces. These include a skateboard-themed group called KickFlip that features a bed with skateboards on the headboard and footboard.

The pieces are made of solid pine, one of Brazilís most important resources for furniture manufacturers and importers.

“Brazil has always had good access to wonderful and good quality pine supplies,” said C. David Gingrich, senior vice president of multi-channel sales. “And there are factories that are used to mass production who are excellent at finishing pine, which takes some expertise.”

The company is currently working with three factories in southern Brazil, Gingrich said. He added that in addition to the finishing capabilities, the manufacturers possess up-to-date technology that allows them to maximize the yields on the wood. Currency exchange rates also are making Brazil much more favorable as a sourcing location today than it has been in recent years.

The company currently sources most of its wood youth line from Vietnam and sources some metal furniture from China. In addition to the materials and currency advantages, the Brazil product can arrive in the U.S. quicker than product from Asia once it ships.

Bunk beds start around $299 retail and top out at $1,599 for a model called Wyatt that has closet and drawer storage.

“The response was fantastic,” Gingrich said of dealer reaction at market. “We are going into production on virtually everything we showed that was new.”

He added that response was the most strong on middle price points within the line. The groups, he said, are in production now and are expected to hit retail around late August.

For dealers looking to expand their selection, more new product is planned for both the summer Las Vegas Market and the October High Point, Gingrich noted.
